White III

October 2008

Flipbook - 300 mm by 108 mm

Edition of 10, signed by the artist
The book is presented wrapped in white paper, on the inside of which there is a multiple-sequence montage of all the photographs that were used in the book.

The photographs were taken by Judy Goldhill
on 5 June 2008 at her studio in North London.

The flipbook animates part of one of Lee's live body performances and includes 56 inkjet photographs by the talented Judy Goldhill. It shows Lee facing the camera naked, rising from a crouched position to stand with his arms stretch vertically above his head. As his body is unfurled, white body paint progressively covers more and more of his body, in part at least, in line with his hands and arms. By the middle of the book his hands have reach the highest point and the paint has completely covered his body. The second half of the book shows the reverse.

Kaori Maki, working with Mark Winstanley at The Wyvern Bindery, bound the book with a white rigid spine and soft covers so that, while holding the binding, it is possible to flick through the whole book and see Lee's body at once exposed while at one and the same time covered in white.

Book binding at Wyvern Bindery - I am grateful for Mark Winstanley's inventive and helpful suggestions and appreciate Kaori Maki's care in binding the book so beautifully.

White IV

White IV consists of an envelope containing a miniature self-assembly cut-out of the artist. The envelope is made from paper printed with a multiple-sequence montage of all the 56 photographs that were used in the flipbook, White III. In the envelope there are three white-paint on black-card body-prints of Lee’s hands, feet and genitals; along with white body paint, instructions, a tiny brush and a cutout stand-up model figure - for a do-it-yourself White experience.

White III and IV were created with AM Bruno and appeared in six different artist books events.

AM BRUNO represents current artistic thought, practice and sensibility translated and expanded into book art form. The artists in the group are visual and conceptual practitioners in all media, including painting, photography, video, performance and sculpture. The themes vary from inquiry into the nature of books/sketchbooks, human body/desire/private life, the value of artificiality, writing/image and time. AM Bruno is an alliance of 24 artists initiated by MA fine art graduates from Central Saint Martins.

There is an illustrated catalogue to accompany the AM Bruno collection of artist books.

Artist's Book Fair

Also at Wolstenholme Projects, Liverpool Independent Biennale, an exhibition entitled ‘Wrapped and Encased’
‘Wrapped and Encased’ was: “an exhibition of envelopes as containers and messengers. Envelopes - evocative objects, witnesses; they hide and disclose, hint at communication, (suggest) secret networks and allusions, postal systems, icons on mobile phones; their contents invisible, (a) symbol for the pre internet era. The gallery (was) remodeled into a domestic setting, which act(ed) as a container for envelopes and their insides.”
